One in eight people around the world live with sight loss
Gyles Brandreth, renowned broadcaster, writer and incredible CBM UK supporter, highlights the urgent need to address the 1.1 billion people worldwide living with sight loss today:
“One in eight people around the world live with sight loss – but here’s the shocking truth: 90% of it could have been prevented or treated with something as straightforward as a cataract surgery or a pair of glasses.
And yet, for millions of people across the world, in countries like Nigeria and Nepal, affording and accessing basic eye care can be out of reach. Imagine losing your sight just because you can’t afford treatment. It’s simply not right.”
Bandana’s Story
Six-year-old Bandana from rural Nepal, South Asia, was born blind because of cataracts in both of her eyes. She grew up never seeing the faces of her mother and father clearly.
Access to surgery to restore her sight was completely out of reach. For many of the most marginalised people, access to basic healthcare in Nepal is almost impossible.
“Because we have no money, we were not able to afford treatment”.
A World in Focus

Bringing Bandana’s World in Focus
Last year, Bandana’s mother, Lila heard about Biratnagar Eye Hospital through an eye screening camp carried out in remote communities, to identify children and adults living with sight loss.
Our team visited Bandana and her parents, and thanks to the support of people like you, were able to refer her for sight-saving surgery.
Bandana’s eyes were operated on, and she was able to see clearly for the first time – bringing her world into focus.
“After the patch was removed, my daughter looked at my face, and I became very emotional,” Lila told us.
Make a life-changing difference this Easter
Our project in Nepal aims to provide:
Eye screenings
Provide eye screenings for 627,000 people through community outreach, door-to-door screenings, and awareness-raising programmes.
Pairs of glasses
Provide 1,800 pairs of glasses to children experiencing poverty.
Teaching
Train 400 eye health professionals in eye health and disability inclusion.
Eye surgeries
Perform 23,950 eye surgeries at a subsidised rate, including 3,000 on children, enabling them to see again or for the first time.
Eye and Ear Care Centres
Establish 10 new Eye and Ear Care Centres, creating vital access points for healthcare in underserved communities.

Focus on: Nepal, South Asia
Nepal is one of the world’s poorest countries, and 21.9% of people are affected by vision loss.
CBM has been working in partnership with Nepal National Society for Comprehensive Eye Care for over 40 years to provide high quality, affordable and sustainable eye care to families like Bandana’s who otherwise would not be able to afford it.
Together, we support access to inclusive eye health services, including enabling people experiencing poverty in rural areas to access cataract surgery.
